WordPress 3.0, iOS4 and other updates

June 20th, 2010

Yesterday I’ve started to update my infrastructure (not GIS powered for those of you knowing them ;-) ).

One of the big changes so far: WordPress has released version 3.0 and I updated now. Went fine with one issue coming up:
I had to update my php.ini to allow more than 16M cache for scripting. There have been troubles already in the past when viewing the admin-page – but with 3.0 installed the admin page even didn’t show at all.
To get rid of this I first removed all the plugins to get sure the installation was fine on it’s base. After this the php.ini was updated with this little change: …16M… to …64M… for setting the cache for scripting.
Now it works perfectly.

iOS 4Second thing was that I’ve updated my iPhones last week with the GM iOS4 and realized that the phones performance went down dramatically.
I wasn’t sure what the problem was – but I saw it running faster on other phones…
In addition I was disappointed that the ‘wallpaper’ feature will NOT work on 3G phones. I think this is not performance related at all, only to push ‘old’ 3G users to the shop for getting a new iPhone4.
So I jailbreaked one of my phones today to check it out – and surprise, surprise… the phone is FASTER and reacting on touch-events now again much better. So my decision for the next days: I’ll give it a try ;-)

Quote of the day…

February 15th, 2010

Translation (google):

On every image in the movie is applied a filter to reduce square areas, which comes from codec’s compression algorithm.

Auf jedem Bild in der Film wird mit einem Filter, um Platz Bereichen, die von Kompressions-Codec-Algorithmus kommt zu reduzieren.

Do you like Pandora / Hulu ?

January 10th, 2010

I loved Pandora until they stopped their service outside USA. The same for Hulu – no service outside USA:

Hmm… really? No – not at all. There’s a solution out there in the endless universe of the Internet. You don’t have to give Google now a try – here is the solution you need (Mac & Windows):

This little application sets up a VPN tunnel between your computer and the Internet gateway of AnchorFree.

One of the big advantages is that the performance is really great – it just works as you are expecting it should work. Videos at Hulu are streamed greatly, pandora’s radio streaming works like a glance.

So that’s what you are waiting for :-)

Use this link to download Hotspot Shield.

Setting up is as easy as the download itself – on the Mac click on the little Icon right beside the Spotlight icon and click then on the menu entry ‘Connect’ – that’s it:

Weekend stuff… Drobo again & Philips Latte Select

July 26th, 2009
Latte Select

Latte Select

And again I have troubles with two items in my flying circus.

The brand new Philips Latte Select failed now the second time – after it was delivered the first time by amazon.de I had to return it immediately because the watertank was broken (the water indicator).

They sent me a new one and everything worked fine – until yesterday evening. We made two cups of Latte Macchiato – but then the machine stopped working. Normal coffee worked, but as soon as a ‘milky’ version was selected the start/stop button light was just flashing… not the fast flashing indicating that milk or water is missing – no a slower one which is not described in the manual…

Drobo 2TB

Drobo 2TB

But not enough – I started to move large files to my drobo (about 5 files each about 2GB). While the move was performed my MacBook Pro decided to start a backup via TimeMachine to my drobo. After 2mins the light indicators of the drobo where black. It just stopped working.

I disconnected the drobo from the Airport Extreme, pulled out the power line, waited some minutes and then re-powered the device. Re-connected it to the APE and tried again. Same procedure… this time much faster :-( … after seconds the lights where black and the drobo didn’t respond any more.

Because it was already two o’clock in the morning I decided that I wait until the next day to try it again.

This morning I connected the device directly to the MacBook Pro because it was not possible to restart the drobo again while it was connected to the Airport Extreme – and it worked.

So I think this time the Airport Extreme seems to be the device to blame. I restarted the device and then reconnected the drobo – and now everything worked. Strange behaviour….

The Airport Extreme was not dead during this time – everything else worked fine…

Update:
The Philips Senseo LS has been picked up yesterday (Aug., 3rd 2009) evening to take a little repair session… we’ll see how long this session will take.

Update 2:
As promised by Philips Support the Senseo was sent back within 10 workdays. And works great :-)

200PS on the river ‘Inn’

July 12th, 2009

Yesterday Nico & Marco – my two sons – had an appointment with our local Firedepartment in Kufstein, Tyrol. They have been invited to have a ride with their 200PS jetboat on the river ‘Inn’.

So we started at 9 o’clock and where shown the equipment of the firedepartment – their cars, trucks, watertanks, uniforms, helmets and much, much more – the kids had fun, really fun :-)

After half an hour we where picked up with one of their trucks and rushed to the docking station of their jetboat in Zell. The kids – and we too – where very excited. They got their lifejackets – a little too big for Nico… but no problem at all… and then we started to a ride over the Inn.

It was really great and we all had fun and learned much about our firedepartment. Photos will follow on flickr soon – check them out!

Thank you to all involved who made this event happen!
