First week with my new iPad

August 7th, 2010 6 comments

iPadFirst of all – i’m editing this post with my MB Pro. I tried to do it with the iPad… but the article was too long and there are issues. Issues like the keyboard… read more:

The beginning:
Unboxing was a little bit suprising because the box was much bigger than the iPad itself. Unlike for Apple because they try to avoid too much packaging material these a days.Β In the box there’s of course the iPad itself and a little paper wallet containing the warrenty certificate and a sheet with infos how to proceed.Β And there’s the charger with the USB connection cable… But the charger wasn’t needed because of the fact that the iPad was charged fully.

Next step:
Contacting iTunes – so i had to startup my MB pro and connect my iPad via the USB-cable.

Setup:
Setting up the iPad is easy at all. After connection iTunes automatically starts up and the first backup of the device takes place. Select the content you want (don’t forget to get iBooks from the iTunes store!) and organize the apps with the designated tool in iTunes. Really easy – and for those of us already owning a iPhone / iPod – nothing new.

Content:
Yes – that’s the point i stick to. iBooks only shows up FREE books which are Project Gutenberg related – nothing else. But I’ve heard that ‘Random House’ already has a signed up contract with Apple for their books Β to be available within the Austrian Apple-Store. We’ll have to wait..

Movies? – No movies there, no TV-series. Only podcasts.

Alternative contents:
You are able to put your own videos into iTunes – this is what I’ve done before the iPad – this is what I’ll do now πŸ™‚
Books? Well – use Stanza – this app allows you to add ePub documents which are available through the internet. And of course PDFs. But PDFs are not so nice to be handled within the iPad as eBooks are.

Differences to the iPhone:
There are differences.

Safari. There’s no ‘Search within this page’ feature as you have on the MB Pro. I’m missing it really.

But:
I – and my family – love the iPad. For reading. Surfing. Watching movies. Using Apps.
It’s so easy to browse the content you want. Flash? Not missing at all. Most of the internet sites I’m used to visit already switched to HTML5. Videos are available… Ads are not missed.
You’re able to write emails – if they aren’t too long. You’re able to post on your blog – if the article isn’t too long. There are things you can do with the iPad perfectly – others are… well – not horrible… but simply not convenient.

Give it away again? No. Never. πŸ™‚

Update:
All the issues I had are solved by giving the iPad settings a closer look. Settings I’ve done month’s ago on the iPhone πŸ™‚

AppleTV fΓΌr $ 99?

May 28th, 2010 No comments

Apple TVThere are rumors in the air that Apple plans an update for the AppleTV box:

  • based on iPhone OS 4
  • flashmemory at 16GB only
  • streaming content from the cloud
  • 1080p HD video
  • connectivity to TimeCapsule for local storage extension

And all this on a price of $99 – introduced on WWDC 2010? Sounds promising – and would tell us what Apple plans to do with it’s new datacenter πŸ˜‰

Waiting now for the WWDC…

Mobile Air Mouse… a must have!

Mobile Air Mouse

Mobile Air Mouse

Do you have the same problems using your iPhone / MBP:

  • using Apples ‘Remote’ App does’nt allow you to start your iTunes visualizer…
  • using ‘Rowmote’ allows you to use different Apps, but you can’t control Applications not in the Rowmote-List…

So – what I was missing is a app which controls the mouse (or is an replacement for the multitouch pad of the MBP) and all the other stuff.

In the app store I found an application called ‘AIR MOUSE’ – and the description sounded really interesting.

To use ‘Mobile Air Mouse’ on your iPhone / iPod Touch you need to be aware about some points:

  • Air Mouse is working within you local WLAN topology
  • on the target computer has to be installed a little server app which can be downloaded here
  • the ‘AIR MOUSE’ app itself has to be installed on your mobile device

The application itself works like an additional multitouch trackpad (note: not all the gestures of your MBP are recognized) which is connected remotely to your computer.

I’m using it to control my MBP when it’s connected to my 42″ LCD TV or to a beamer.

Two main setups are available: portrait & landscape

Air Mouse - Portrait modePortrait mode:
While using the portrait mode you can use the display as a ‘normal’ trackpad – an area on the bottom of the trackpad with two yellow triangles indicates the scroll-control of the touchpad. So moving your finger in the scroll area scrolls the display on the remote computer. Tapping the touchpad is related to a single or double click (one tap –> single click, two taps –> double click). Tapping the touchpad once with two fingers end up in showing of the context menu (right-click).

Air Mouse - Portrait mode (Acc.-Mode)But you are also able to use the accelerators of your mobile device to move the cursor on the remote screen – click on the ‘swap-view’ icon in the right hand top corner of your device: your device now shows up an additional yellow ‘line-area’ in the top middle position of the device-display.

Click on this area with one finger and hold it – moving now the device over it’s axis will result in movements of the cursor on the remote screen. Clicking with a second finger on the left side of the area does a left-button click, clicking on the right hand side beside the area does a ‘right-button click’ and shows the context-menu.

Air Mouse - Landscape modeLandscape mode:
The landscape mode does not provide the accelerators – so you only can use the normal remote trackpad feature here. The scroll-buttons are on the right-hand side now.

This mode can be switched-off by deselecting the ‘Force Vertical’ button at the settings menu.

‘AIR MOUSE’ also accepts shaking moves to show up (or hide) the keyboard on the device’ display.

The keyboard area (if displayed – don’t forget to shake ;-)) is full of additional features:

  • controlling your iTunes library (previous song, next song, play / pause, volume +/-, mute, AppStore)
  • your browser (previous page, next page, search, home, refresh, stop, favourites, zoom in/out)
  • Function keys (including custom setups, page down/up, cursor movements, ESC, DEL, ENTER, HOME)

So – for now it seems to be the perfect application controlling my MBP while it is connected to my external display devices.

Palm Pre – are they really so naive?

June 17th, 2009 No comments
...the so called 'iPhone' killer...

...the so called 'iPhone' killer...

You remember the last weeks? Yeah! Palm Pre – the so called iPhone killer – was presented in US.

But what makes it to the iPhone killer?

The absence of a SIM card slot?

So – ok it’s working in US with SPRINT as provider without a SIM card… but what about the ROW?
Calls over skype via a public hotspot πŸ˜‰

Ah! I’ve to call my customer regarding this big deal we are going to make – where the hell is the next McDonalds with a public hotspot??

So – for sure – to be a phone you have to get it working with SIM cards… specially for the ROW…

Syncing music & photos via iTunes?

And what about their press infos about syncing with iTunes?
Well – as far as I know – iTunes is property of Apple (funny, yeah?)… and the Palm Pre isn’t.

So – ok it may work now to sync it via iTunes… but they can’t really be so naive to believe Apple would tolerate this situation in the future – are they?

So I guess with one of the next updates Apple pushes out the Palm Pre would be also pushed out…

Memory – 8GB…

Well 8GB are really not too less – but to be a iPhone killer you also should have a version with more memory available, should’nt you? There is also a version of the new iPhone 3Gs available with 32GB for those of us who also like to come along with their ‘little’ iTunes libraray…

And last but not least – iPhone 3Gs was announced these a days – and since this point it seems to be clear what we can think of a gadget which is called a ‘iPhone killer’.

HOME – a movie by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

June 11th, 2009 No comments

home

This movie is amazing – wonderful pictures and shocking details about our HOME, the earth.

It’s really fascinating to see how beautiful our planet is – and depressing to see what man kind is doing to it.

There’s nothing more to say about – watch for yourself and be impressed…

Tethering with iPhone

June 10th, 2009 No comments
New Network connection

New Network connection

Well – some guys have to wait till 17th of June to get tethering on their iPhone 3G working. I know one of them – customer at ORANGE…

Mhhhm – T-Mobile.AT seems not to be as bad as thought – they offer tethering without any notice… it’s just WORKING

After upgrading to 3.0 and connecting the iPhone to my MBP I changed the tethering status in the prefs of the iPhone…

After that i connected it to my MBP and got the next message there to setup the new network
And then – yeah we put down that cocktail… Tethering was working over WiFi and 3G:

So well – Chris… WHO has now the wrong provider-contract?
